Colorado in the Autumn – Changing Colors

Colorado Autumn 2016 – a great year for aspens and color!

The changing colors of fall is always a wonderful time for a 4-wheel drive trip.  While the east coast may have spectacular color, so do we in Colorado.  One of my favorite places is South Part, and this year did not disappoint.

One of the most popular places for the changing colors is the Kenosha pass on Colorado 285. Often called “leaf-peepers”, a lot of people head to the parking lot at the summit, and take a walk/hike on the Colorado Trail. We go further afield to try to get away from the crowds.  This year we headed toward Buckskin Joe Colorado, off of County Road 8.

There’s nothing left of the original settlement, whose population numbered in the thousands! There are a few foundations among the grasses, but the cemetery remains. This former settlement is marked by the round wagon wheel sign #1. NOTE:  The Forrest Service has a great guide explaining the points of interest. Buy that brochure at the HQ in Fairplay!
